What’s Really Behind the Tough Interview Questions? How to handle tough interview questions. I remember the one interview question/situation that made me think, “I’m done for!!” I was interviewing for a recruiter position with my potential boss, Amy, the Human Resource Vice President at a bank. Without saying hello, Amy leaned back in her big leather chair, lit a cigarette, threw the pack of cigs on the desk, blew smoke in my face and said, “So tell me about yourself.” For a split second I thought, “I’m dead!” Then I realized this was a test of intimidation. Game on! I ignored the smoke from the unfiltered Camel, sat up in my chair and decided that with my answer, I was going to make friends with Amy. I figured that if I was offered the job, I would ultimately be working for her, so I might as well test my ability to survive in what would be a challenging environment.
